Who doesn't love summer? This web page will be dedicated to summer and all the great things we experience during this most favorite season.

Things To Do

Below I will discuss things people do in the summer. I will discuss some popular summer activities, and name some favorite summer destinations.

Summer Activities

Summer is a time when people enjoy many different activities.

During the hot summer months, multitudes of people head to the beach. People go to the beach for several reasons. Some go to swim, others bring a book and just relax. Many people enjoy getting a tan, although tanning is much different than now than it used to be. When I was a teen, many girls would go to the beach with tanning accelerators and just bake. I'm very fair skinned, so I could never do that. I used to feel very left out, but it turned out to be a blessing, as their skin now has the same look and consistency as my pocket book. Some people play games like volleyball. Others go to show off that great new swimsuit. Whatever you do at the beach, always remember to bring sunscreen.

Swimming is another very popular summer activity. Many people go to the beach to swim, but one can also swim at public and private pools. As with beaches, always make sure you bring lots of sunscreen and make sure a lifeguard is present before you take that dip.

One more great summer activity is boating. Some people don't have a boat, so they use makeshift items to get the same effect. I guess that would be considered floating. Many people enjoy renting a canoe, paddle boat, or even going inner-tubing on a local lake or river.

Outdoor concerts are also very popular. Many times they are held in parks. Sometimes they are even free.

The last two summer activities I will discuss are fireworks and camping. Many people enjoy camping in the woods. They go into the woods to "rough it" though I never really enjoyed it. They sit around a campfire and tell scary stories and eat Smores, which frankly creeps me out (the scary stories, I'm not afraid of Smores). Going to see a fireworks show is in my opinion the greatest thing ever. Most of the time fireworks are reserved for the 4th of July, but they are also used during celebrations. I am very fortunate that I live in an area where we have the Macy's fireworks show. You can see it in Liberty State Park, which is across from the Statue of Liberty. If you go, you need to bring a sleeping bag, because you will probably be Turnpike Camping. Turnpike camping is done when an all the people in a given state, in this case New Jersey, are trying to access the same road at the same time. We do the same thing other campers do. We make Smores with the fires of cars whose engines have overheated. And the scary stories...well, I live in Jersey.

Remember, you should use sunscreen when doing any of these activities. Sunscreen is extremely important. Try to get the highest SPF possible. If you fail to do this you will get alligator skin face. Trust me, you do not want this.

Just use the sunscreen and limit your direct exposure to the sun. You may also want to try a hat. I don't mean to keep repeating myself, but when you are older you will be glad you protected your skin. I know I am.

Favorite Summer Destinations

Probably the most popular summer destination is the beach, in any country or town.

Summer is a time when many Americans travel. Many people take the bulk of their vacation time during the summer. Traveling abroad is popular this time of year. Europe is a very popular destination. One popular destination within the US is New York City, which has millions of things to do. New York City has some fantastic museums. It also has Broadway. If you have never seen a Broadway show you should. I particularly love musicals. I love hearing people sing on a Broadway stage. The singers can belt out a tune so loudly, and their voices are just amazing. A real treat. San Francisco and Las Vegas are also popular destinations. I have been to Atlantic City, but never Las Vegas. I don't gamble. I have nothing against it morally, it's just that when I spend money, I need to take something home in a bag.

For those who don't have the money or time to go away, I suggest taking day trips. Look on the website of your town. You might be very surprised to discover that many towns have interesting historical parks, centers or homes. A day trip is a quick and inexpensive getaway. It might even be educational.

Things to Eat and Drink

Summer is a time when people consume special food and drinks. Here I will discuss some summer foods and give you some recipes for summer drinks.

Things to Eat

Summer is a time for vacations to special places, parties and barbecues. This usually means being treated to foods we don't eat in the winter.

Ice cream is a favorite, not just in summer, but it is very cooling in hot weather. My personal favorite is vanilla. Popsicles are also great if you're counting calories. I enjoy freezing orange juice in ice cube trays. When the juice is almost frozen put a stick in each of the cubes. Delicious, nutritious and low in calories, how great is that?

Barbecues provide many summer favorites. People love to cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. Potato and Macaroni salads are a wonderful addition to the meal. I also love it when summer fruits like watermelon are added to the menu.

Things to Drink

A favorite summertime drink is lemonade. Lemonade is very refreshing on a hot day. It comes in two types, regular yellow and pink. I prefer pink lemonade, because it looks prettier in a glass. Many times you will see children selling lemonade in little roadside stands. I can't resist stopping at these. The kids are usually so cute and they seem to get a kick out of selling it.

If you're like me, you love holding drinks of pretty colors with lots of ice, and of course the traditional, albeit tacky, umbrella. However, not all of us are drinkers. Below I will give you some recipes for non-alcoholic drinks. If you do enjoy alcoholic drinks, please remember to drink responsibly.

Recipes for Non-alcoholic Drinks

Cappuccino Cooler 1½ cups cold coffee, 1½ cups chocolate ice cream, ¼ cup Hershey's chocolate syrup, crushed ice, whipped cream In blender container place cofee, ice cream and syrup. Cover; blend until smooth. Serve immediately over crushed ice; garnish with whipped cream. 1

Please note, I have tried these and they are great.

I hope you have enjoyed my page on summer. I doubt this article will make the MSN Travel Guide, but perhaps you have gotten an idea or two? I personally think the hardest thing about this class (besides the div tag) is writing enough narrative to apply classes, styles, spans, etc.
